Since 1985, the BMW M5 has balanced extreme speed with everyday practicality. It lets you carry a laptop, family, and even a golden retriever — all without compromise. Now, BMW’s engineers have created a new hybrid M5 that keeps this tradition alive, pushing boundaries while staying sensible.
You might expect the M5 to be a large, aggressive muscle car. And you would be right. But the latest generation, called the G90, feels leaner and fitter. Imagine the previous M5 after months of intense training.
Under the hood, the M5 still sports a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. BMW chose not to change it, as it was already near perfect. The exciting update is the addition of a plug-in hybrid system. The M5 now fully embraces the electric revolution, joining cars like the Bentley Continental GT by going hybrid-only.
Car for a Quick Getaway or High-Speed Chase
Don’t worry, traditionalists. This hybrid isn’t about slow, boring rides. Instead, it delivers nearly 730 horsepower — almost as much as a Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. That kind of power makes your heart race as you accelerate down the motorway. It’s the perfect car for a quick getaway or a high-speed chase. Supercar performance hides under the guise of a family sedan.

BMW claims the M5 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. However, it feels even quicker. It seems to have a reason to run fast — like escaping an unseen threat. When you press the accelerator, the car doesn’t just accelerate; it detonates with raw power.
Thanks to its all-wheel-drive system, the M5 grips the road perfectly. It never spins its wheels or causes a fuss. It launches smoothly and confidently, despite the immense power. Surprisingly, it also stays civilized when needed.
BMW M5 Quite and Smooth
At low speeds, with settings toned down, the M5 is quiet and smooth. It behaves like a calm sedan on a school run. But flip the switch to full M mode, and the car transforms. It becomes a fire-breathing warhorse with luxurious leather seats and a top-tier Bowers & Wilkins sound system. It’s like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with modern comforts like air conditioning and Apple CarPlay.
Inside, BMW embraces a techno-luxury spaceship vibe. A massive curved display extends from behind the steering wheel halfway across the dashboard. The cabin is covered in more leather than an Italian handbag shop. However, there are so many screens and options that using the menus feels complex. You might need a degree just to unlock all the drive modes.
The exterior looks unmistakably like an M5 — essentially a 5 Series with muscle. It’s not bulky like a club bouncer but more like a sleek, menacing Jason Statham. Lean, muscular, and ready for action.
Quality Comfort and Aggression
The ride quality suits both business-class comfort and track-day aggression. The suspension adapts quickly, offering compliance on rough roads and firmness when you want sporty handling. The adaptive dampers read the road instantly, smoothing bumps or stiffening for sharp turns.
Some driving modes are intense. Five minutes in M2 mode, the car challenged me with its wild behaviour. It’s the track setting, and it’s clear I’m not cut out for full track car performance.

The hybrid system isn’t just a fancy add-on. You can drive in electric-only mode for short trips, perfect for a quiet supermarket run or grabbing coffee. Though you might not use it often, it’s handy when you want to sneak home late without disturbing neighbours. The car hums gently for those moments.
Of course, this level of performance and luxury comes at a price. The M5 costs roughly as much as a studio apartment on Yas Island. But apartments don’t do 0–100 km/h in 3.5 seconds or come with ventilated seats. They certainly don’t make your heart race at the press of a button.
To The Sum
The BMW M5 truly earns its “Ultimate Driving Machine” title. It remains absurdly powerful and thrilling but now adds hybrid tech and sophistication. It’s a business-lunatic sedan with more muscle, more tech, and more sensibility. You can drive it to a board meeting or a high-speed chase. While I didn’t do either, it made me feel like the coolest person on the school run.
