EDGE Group Enters New Era in Autonomous Drone Technology with Strategic Collaboration
EDGE Group, a global leader in advanced technology and defence, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Wazoku, an innovation scale-up, to launch a global innovation challenge aimed at identifying next-generation “Drone in a Box” solutions. This challenge, available through the Wazoku Crowd platform, invites innovators, start-ups, universities, and established organizations from around the world to present fully integrated systems that combine drones with docking and charging stations, ground control platforms, and operational software, all packaged into a scalable unit.
The Challenge: Seeking the Future of Autonomous UAV Systems
The global competition, which offers a total prize fund of US$20,000, is designed to address the increasing global demand for autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems that are cost-effective, rapidly deployable, and resilient in harsh environments. EDGE is looking for solutions that require minimal human intervention and feature cutting-edge technologies, such as AI-driven autonomy, predictive maintenance, advanced navigation, and mobile or remote deployment capabilities.
Key details of the challenge:
- Prize Fund: US$20,000 total, with US$15,000 for the winner and US$5,000 for the runner-up.
- Eligibility: Open to innovators, start-ups, universities, and organizations worldwide.
- Deadline: Submissions must be received by 7th July 2025.
- Finalists: Will be invited to EDGE for solution demonstrations with potential further development or acquisition opportunities.
Ahmed Al Khoori, Senior Vice President – Strategy & Excellence at EDGE Group, emphasized the strategic importance of this challenge. “This initiative presents a significant opportunity to shape the future of defence technology. By partnering with Wazoku, we are engaging a global community of innovators to define the next evolution of unmanned systems—solutions that could transform ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), logistics, perimeter security, and more.”

EDGE Group’s Commitment to Open Innovation
This innovation challenge is part of EDGE Group broader strategy to foster rapid capability development and strengthen the UAE’s position as a leader in advanced technologies. The initiative supports EDGE’s Learning & Innovation Factory (LIF), a program designed to invest in emerging technologies, drive innovation, and build national capacity.
The challenge represents a key component of EDGE’s strategy for open collaboration, inviting solutions from a wide range of problem-solvers. The selected finalists will have the opportunity to demonstrate their solutions at EDGE’s facilities, with the potential for further collaboration, development, or even acquisition.
“We are excited about the potential of this collaboration,” said Simon Hill, CEO of Wazoku. “EDGE group is one of the most forward-thinking defense and advanced technology groups globally. We are confident that the Wazoku Crowd will generate bold and innovative solutions that align with EDGE’s vision, particularly in the development of autonomous ‘Drone in a Box’ solutions that are critical enablers for autonomous operations.”

Wazoku Crowd: A Global Network of Innovators
Wazoku’s platform connects a diverse group of over 700,000 solvers, including engineers, scientists, technologists, start-ups, and academic institutions. This powerful community has already contributed to successful outcomes for high-profile organizations such as NASA, the UK Ministry of Defence, and the US Navy. Their expertise and creativity will be instrumental in bringing new and exciting solutions to EDGE’s drone challenge.
This collaboration highlights EDGE’s forward-looking approach in harnessing global innovation to push the boundaries of autonomous technology. The “Drone in a Box” concept is a revolutionary step forward in UAV technology, bringing systems that are not only efficient but also adaptable to rapidly changing environments and missions.
Intellectual Property Rights and Future Opportunities
One of the unique aspects of the challenge is that finalists will retain the intellectual property (IP) rights to their solutions. However, they will have the opportunity to enter into negotiations with EDGE for the further development or acquisition of their technology. This provides innovators with a chance to showcase their ideas on the world stage while maintaining ownership of their intellectual property.
As the deadline approaches, EDGE group continues to invite participants to submit their detailed technical proposals and supporting video demonstrations. The challenge is a pivotal moment for EDGE group, marking a new chapter in the defense and technology sector and reaffirming the Group’s commitment to driving innovation and shaping the future of autonomous UAV systems.
A Transformational Shift in Defence Technology
This global open innovation challenge sets the stage for a transformative shift in defense technology, particularly in the field of autonomous UAVs. EDGE’s collaboration with Wazoku to identify and develop cutting-edge “Drone in a Box” solutions is a clear signal of the Group’s intent to push the boundaries of unmanned systems and shape the next evolution of autonomous operations.
As the competition progresses, the world will be watching to see which innovators rise to the occasion and deliver the next breakthrough in autonomous drone technology.
